Typically, drum brakes operate in a normal operating range of 400° – 500° F, and usually have a high temperature in the 600° - 750° range. Air disc brakes have a normal operating temperature of 600° - 800° and a high temperature of 1,300° - 1,500° F.
This is the result of less friction surface area doing the work to stop a commercial vehicle.
Brake technicians are advised to inspect all wheel end components for signs of thermal fatigue and wear. Go beyond just the brake components as this high heat can affect ABS sensors, valve stems and tire beads.
